Extending Your Program

If you aren't able to complete your program by the end date listed on your I-20 or DS-2019, you should apply for an extension at least 30 days before that date. If your program end date has already passed, you can't apply for an extension.

Eligibility

To apply for an extension, you need to:

  1. Have a current I-94 record showing duration of status (D/S).
  2. Have maintained your status and be making academic progress.
  3. Show that the delay is caused by legitimate academic reasons (change of major or research topic, loss of credits when transferring to Emory, unexpected research problems) or documented illness.

Procedure

F-1 students

  1. Discuss your extension with your academic advisor or dean.
  2. Complete the I-20 extension request e-form in ISSS Link at least 30 days prior to the end date on your current I-20 end date.
  3. PhD students: if there is a change in your financial support, you should also upload a letter (on letterhead with a signature) from Laney Graduate School that states the costs associated with the extension and financial documentation that shows that you can pay those costs. Contact your department chair or academic advisor to get this letter.

J-1 students

  1. Discuss your extension with your academic advisor or dean.
  2. Be ready to upload proof of funding for the requested extended.
  3. Complete the DS-2019 extension request e-form in ISSS Link at least 30 days prior to the current DS-2019 end date.
  4. If you are participating in a bi-lateral exchange program, check with your exchange program coordinator to make sure the exchange agreement allows an extension.

Note: If you a J-1 Non-Degree student, the maximum J-1 stay cannot exceed more that 24 months inclusive of any Academic Training period.
