J-1 Scholar Supplemental Pre-Arrival Checklist

In addition to the items listed on the New Scholar Pre-arrival Checklist, all J-1 scholars will need to complete the following tasks:

  1. Pay the SEVIS I-901 fee.
    • This must be completed prior to applying for the J-1 visa.
    • Find the SEVIS number on the Emory issued DS-2019.
    • Submit the SEVIS fee payment online or via Western Union Quick Pay.
    • The scholar should print the receipt and keep a copy for their records.
      • The scholar will need to submit a copy of the receipt when they complete the online visa application and at their visa interview.

  2. Review the J-1 health insurance requirements.
    • Exchange visitors (the J-1 scholar and any accompanying J-2 dependents) are legally required to carry health insurance while they are in the US.
    • Scholars can expect to pay about $100-200 per month for insurance.
    • If a scholar fails to purchase and maintain adequate health insurance, their J-1 program will be terminated.

  3. Read the following important documents provided by the US Department of State:
  4. Review ISSS' resources for J-1 Scholars

*J-1 scholars who are sponsored by an organization other than Emory should contact their sponsor for pre-departure instructions.
