Housing

First- and second-year undergraduate students are required to live on campus in residence halls.

All other undergraduates (including exchange students) may choose to live either on campus or off campus.

Graduate and professional students and postdoctoral fellows may choose to live in on-campus graduate housing or see accommodations off campus.

For all other international scholars, there are a number of options off campus.

On-campus Housing - Undergraduate

The Emory Office of Residence Life and Housing Operations provides on-campus student housing to undergraduates. There are several residence hall options on both the Atlanta and Clairmont campus.

Residence hall housing is fully furnished, and all utilities (such as water, gas, electricity, internet service, and Emory cable TV) are included in the housing rate.

Residence halls remain open during academic holidays during the fall and spring semesters, and most students are eligible for residential housing during the winter break between the fall and spring semesters.

Costs

Housing costs vary greatly depending upon location, amenities, age of the building, etc. Generally, rent will range from $800 - $2000 per month.

Usually, the rent payment does not include utility costs like heating, air conditioning, or cable.

You'll need about $2,000 for your initial expenses, to cover household necessities and establish utilities like electricity, water, and natural gas.

Questions to ask

Before you sign a lease agreement, you might want to ask about:

  • How long is the lease?
  • When is rent due each month?
  • Do I need to pay a security deposit? If so, how much is it? Will it be refunded at the end of the lease?
  • Are there restrictions on pets or guests?
  • Who will take care of maintenance and repairs?
  • What is the parking availability (if you have a car)?
  • Is the apartment furnished or unfurnished?
  • Are there laundry facilities on-site?
  • Are utilities (gas, electricity, water, garbage collection, cable/internet etc.) included with the rent?

Utilities

If you are renting an apartment off campus, you should ask which utilities are included. Sometimes apartment complexes will include water and garbage pickup in your rent payment. Usually, you'll need to contact utility companies to set up your service for electricity, cable and internet, natural gas, and so on.

As of December 2020, the following companies do not require a social security number to set up service:

• Electricity: Georgia Power will be your electricity provider. Start electric service by registering for an account online at www.georgiapower.com
• Gas: Not all apartments in the US use gas, so find out if you need it first. Gas South is one of your choices. Start service by registering for an account online at http://www.gas-south.com/ or call 1-877-332-5442.
• Water: Your water provider depends on the county you live in. Get information about Dekalb County water service and/or download the application at https://www.dekalbcountyga.gov/sites/default/files/waterapp.pdf. In the space for the Social Security Number, write “non-US citizen.”

Furniture

Most apartments in the US come unfurnished. They will have a stove and refrigerator, but you'll need to get your own bed, sofa, chairs, and other furniture, as well as smaller items like kitchen utensils.

You can either rent or buy furniture while you're here.
