DS-2019 or I-797
A DS-2019 for J-1 Exchange Visitors certifies that you meet the requirements of your program and have the necessary financial resources for your stay in the US. An I-797 approval notice indicates that USCIS has approved a petition for H-1B, O-1, or TN status. You will use one of these documents along with your visa to enter the US.
Keep your DS-2019 or I-797 up to date, and let your ISSS advisor know about any changes.
The DS-2019 contains:
a. Your SEVIS ID number
b. Name of your school (or site of activity)
c. Your degree level or exchange visitor category
d. Program description
e. Program start and estimated completion date
g. Travel signatures
h. Other important information used by the consular official and port of entry official
The I-797B approval notice for consulate notification contains:
a. Name of employer
b. Name of employee
c. Type of notice (receipt or approval)
d. Status approved
e. Dates of approved employment
f. Consulate where employee must appear to receive H-1B visa stamp
The I-797A approval notice for change of status or extension of stay contains:
a. Name of employer
b. Name of employee
c. Type of notice (receipt or approval)
d. Status approved
e. Dates of approved employment
f. Personal record card to be kept by employee
g. Generated I-94 for change of status or extension of stay
