SCAM ALERT Recent scams targeting Emory International students and scholars
JUNE 13, 2018
Recently, there has been an increase in a scam targeting international students and scholars, where callers claim to be from the Internal Revenue Service (IRS). Often times the callers will disguise their phone numbers and it will appear that they are calling from IRS, FBI, USCIS, DHS, law enforcement, or other government agency.
As a reminder, the IRS, FBI, USCIS, DHS, law enforcement, or other government agency will never:
- Call and demand immediate payment over the phone;
- Demand payment with a prepaid debit card, gift card, or ask for your credit/debit card number over the phone; or
- Threaten to call the police or immigration authorities.
If you get a call like this, report it online to the Treasury Inspector General for Tax Administration. You can also call to report it to Emory Police Department at 404.727.8005. To stay updated, visit the Emory Police Department Facebook page.
