ISSS Black History Month Field Trip

Are you looking for an opportunity to learn more about Atlanta’s civil rights history during Black History Month?

ISSS is pleased to offer our popular annual field trip exploring several of Atlanta’s historic civil rights landmarks and sites.  This year, we are expanding to offer more slots, thanks to the partnership with Emory Global Engagement and the Truth, Racial Healing, and Transformation (TRHT) Initiative.

Event Details:

  • Field Trip Title: Connecting Civil Sites and Civil Rights at Home and Abroad
  • Date: Saturday, February 15
  • Time: 9:00am – 6:00pm
  • Transportation: Transportation to/from campus and to all field trip sites included with registration
  • This free program is open to all Emory students and scholars on a first-come, first-served basis.

Highlights of the Trip:

  • Receive a copy of Civil Sites: Sweet Auburn, A Journey Through Atlanta’s National Treasure and hear from the author, Gene Kansas, during an insightful presentation
  • Enjoy lunch with field trip participants
  • Experience a guided bus tour of Atlanta’s historic Sweet Auburn neighborhood, exploring its pivotal role in the African American community during the early 20th century
  • Take a walking tour of the King Center, learn about Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.'s life and legacy, and discover the neighborhood where he grew up
