Biography

As a Senior Advisor, Joan Lindsey works with international students, scholars, and administrators regarding federal immigration and employment regulations, Emory resources, and related matters. Joan has been responsible for all areas of immigration advising to students and scholars during the past 32 years. Prior to coming to Emory, she worked at Western Kentucky advising international students there for 11 years. She spent 4 years as director of the international house at the University of Tennessee-Knoxville and 3 years advising international student and scholars and directing international admissions at the University of Missouri Kansas City.

Joan started out her own college years with 3 music scholarships at Campbellsville College in Kentucky. After teaching music for 5 years, she took a job at Western Kentucky University in the international student affairs office expecting to put her husband through college. It was not very long until Joan realized that she absolutely loved working with international students and scholars. While working full time with 3 small children, she finished up her bachelor’s degree in psychology and completed a master’s in education focusing on counseling and international education.

Several international students have lived with her family in their home, and she enjoys the opportunity to have occasional personal chats with our visiting scholars.
