Biography

As associate director, Terry manages the ISSS student and scholar advising team and establishes immigration policy and procedures. In addition to also chairing the ISSS Student Liaison meetings with campus partners, Terry advises students and scholars and acts as a liaison to various government agencies. He serves as the Responsible Officer (RO) for Emory’s J-1 Exchange Visitor Program.

Born and raised in Northwest Iowa, Terry received his BA in communications and business administration from Concordia College in Minnesota, and his MS in counseling from Georgia State University (GSU). He became interested in international education while working as a campus pastor at Emory and GSU from 1988 to 1993. During that 5-year period, he worked with international students settling into their academic careers at both institutions and started learning as much about immigration laws, rules, and regulations as possible. After completing his MS degree, he began working at GSU’s International Student and Scholar Services office in the fall of 1994, establishing and expanding the employment-based services. He came to Emory's ISSS office in 1997.

In his free time, Terry enjoys spending time with his young daughter, walking, swimming, reading, listening to music, and traveling.
