As an International Student and Scholar Advisor, Derek Baran works with international students, scholars, and administrators regarding federal immigration and employment regulations, Emory resources, and related matters.
Born in Poland, Dariusz (Derek) has lived overseas in Austria, France, and the Netherlands, and stateside has lived in New Jersey, Arizona, Wisconsin, Massachusetts, Pennsylvania, and now Georgia. He arrived in the United States in 1985 with no English language skills and succeeded in completing his bachelor’s degree in business administration and international business from William Patterson University in New Jersey, and his master of international management degree from Thunderbird American Graduate School of International Management in Arizona. He has worked overseas for both American and Austrian companies from 1994 to 1997 in international management, marketing, logistics, and import-export.
In 2003, he decided to take a different direction with his career and immersed himself in the field of international education, working as an international student advisor, academic advisor, and study abroad advisor at Beloit College in Wisconsin and subsequently at Miami-Dade College in Florida. He then moved to Pennsylvania to work as an immigration specialist at the University of Pittsburgh, where he has had opportunity to learn the entire span of nonimmigrant and immigrant issues involving international students and scholars.
He speaks Polish, English, German, and Russian, and hopes to learn and increase his fluency in French, Spanish, and Mandarin. In his free time, he enjoys traveling, volunteering, and spending quality time in conversation with good company.
